War And Movies
Apr 14, 2009
The Bellum blog, a project of the Stanford Review dealing with geopolitics and international security, recently asked Andrew some questions about Hollywood war movies. His answers are now posted: “To my mind, even if you make a great film, if it endangers American troops in the field fighting to defend you, well, congratulations, you won the Oscar, but as a human being, you’re trash.”

Andrew in Pajamas
Feb 18, 2009
Andrew has now joined forces with Pajamas Media and has a new blog there called "Klavan on the Culture." He'll also soon be doing commentaries by the same name on PJTV. Along with his writings at City Journal and on the blog Big Hollywood, Andrew hopes to use this exciting, frequently-updated new venue to challenge the assumptions poured into the American consciousness through our culture. In his opening salvo, Andrew writes: "For the last forty years, we conservatives have allowed the left to monopolize the culture. Partly, sure, that’s because the left excludes and blacklists conservative artists. But it’s also due to our own neglect, philistinism and old-fogey-ositude. Whatever the causes, though, movies, television, literature, music, mainstream news, liberal arts courses in universities—all the bastions of cultural power are in the hands of leftist rascals, fools and clowns." Hooray for Big Hollywood
Jan 6, 2009
Andrew has joined the insanely talented crew launching Andrew Breitbart's new site "Big Hollywood." Edited by former "Dirty Harry's Place" blogger John Nolte, the site is an attempt to win back popular culture for common sense, pro-American values. Along with Andrew - who has a lead-off piece called "Hooray for Big Hollywood" - roll-out bloggers include Congressman Thaddeus McCotter, showbiz perennial Orson Bean and, of course, John "Dirty Harry" Nolte himself. In a Washington Times piece announcing the launch, Breitbart laid it on the line: "Big Hollywood’s modest objective: to change the entertainment industry. To make Hollywood something we can believe in - again. In order to give millions of Americans hope. Until conservatives, libertarians and Republicans - who will be the lion’s share of Big Hollywood’s contributors - recognize that (pop) culture is the big prize and that politics is secondary, there will be no victory in this important battle." Happy New Year from AndrewKlavan.com
Dec 31, 2008
2008 was a banner year for Andrew and his family. His novel "Empire of Lies" was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and reached number one on Amazon’s thriller list. His Wall Street Journal op-ed comparing the Batman of the film "The Dark Knight" to President George W. Bush set fire to the internet, driving the crazy left even crazier and winning Andrew a much-cherished letter of appreciation from the president himself. Named a contributing editor to the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal, Andrew wrote a trilogy of pieces on Hollywood’s mis-treatment of the War on Terror, beginning with his critical analysis “The Lost Art of War,” continuing with his account of his trip to view training exercises at Fort Bragg, “Braggistan in the America of the Imagination,” and concluding with a report on his journey into the Afghanistan war zone, “Five Days at the End of The World.” Andrew also got sole screenwriting credit on the horror film remake “One Missed Call,” which did decent box office though getting slammed by the critics. Andrew made numerous personal appearances during the year, including a speech at the National Book Festival in Washington DC, where he was honored to shake the president’s hand. He made multiple appearances on Glenn Beck’s television program, as well as "Fox and Friends," Mike Gallagher’s radio show and many others, and did a lengthy in-depth interview with the Hoover Institute’s Peter Robinson on “Uncommon Knowledge,” still available on the institute’s web site. All of which is not to mention that he and his wife Ellen are celebrating their daughter Faith’s engagement to a wonderful guy and their son Spencer’s early acceptance to Yale University. “It’s been a tough year for all of us politically and economically, but I’ve got to take a minute to count my blessings too,” Andrew said. In 2009, Andrew is especially looking forward to the publication of the first volume in his young adult thriller series, “The Last Thing I Remember,” from Thomas Nelson. He’s also happy to be joining his friends Andrew Breitbart and John Nolte at their new blog “Big Hollywood.” And he has a new novel for adults in the works as well.

Andrew of Afghanistan
Nov 10, 2008
Last spring, Andrew traveled to Nuristan province Afghanistan and was embedded with our troops there. Andrew went on a mission with a US Provincial Reconstruction Team--a group of soldiers, sailors and airmen assigned to help build roads, generators, courthouses and other structures and services in this poor, rugged and difficult country. Andrew's mission was somewhat different: to debunk Hollywood's depiction of our troops as rapists, pawns, traumatized murderers and doers of atrocities. He returned to write an account of his experience for City Journal, the magazine of the Manhattan Institute. Washington Times Raves for Empire
Sep 8, 2008
The Washington Times Sunday edition for September 7 includes a rave review for "Empire of Lies." The review itself is written with grace and intelligence by James E. Person Jr. Describing the journey of the novel's hero, Jason Harrow, Person writes, "Harrow finds himself caught in a lonely downward spiral into spiritually tormenting circumstances and must face questions that recurrently arise: Where is God's love amid this? Why is He silent? Beyond that, Mr. Klavan recurrently asks, why do those who hold positions of influence and power in our country choose to abet those who would destroy all that remains of Western culture, denigrating the nation that protects and enriches them, all while mouthing the inane, politically correct slogans in which we float indifferently? ...it becomes clear that by the term "empire of lies," Mr. Klavan means the present world of public discourse in the United States." The review concludes, "'Empire of Lies' is a can't-put-it-down thriller for the thinking person."

Andrew has New Op-ed in the Wall Street Journal
Jul 24, 2008
Andrew's new op-ed on the Batman film "The Dark Knight" is now available in the Wall Street Journal.
"Leftists frequently complain that right-wing morality is simplistic. Morality is relative, they say; nuanced, complex. They're wrong, of course, even on their own terms. Left and right, all Americans know that freedom is better than slavery, that love is better than hate, kindness better than cruelty, tolerance better than bigotry. We don't always know how we know these things, and yet mysteriously we know them nonetheless. The true complexity arises when we must defend these values in a world that does not universally embrace them -- when we reach the place where we must be intolerant in order to defend tolerance, or unkind in order to defend kindness, or hateful in order to defend what we love. When heroes arise who take on those difficult duties themselves, it is tempting for the rest of us to turn our backs on them, to vilify them in order to protect our own appearance of righteousness. We prosecute and execrate the violent soldier or the cruel interrogator in order to parade ourselves as paragons of the peaceful values they preserve."

Andrew a "Right Wing Crackpot" and Loving It
Jun 19, 2008
The Associated Press - crowned by media watchdog Powerline as "the worst source of media bias" - has attacked Andrew's new novel "Empire of Lies" for its political stance. Little wonder, as the empire of the title is an American culture stultified by the dishonesty of the left wing media! The reviewer says: "Klavan occupies the portion of the political spectrum commonly known as right-wing crackpot. Through Harrow he tells us, among other things, that the entire media is a left-wing conspiracy, that taxes steal from the rich to give to the poor, that America is in a holy war with Islam, that the truth about darned near everything in the United States is obscured by a blizzard of politically correct lies and that anyone who disagrees with him is deluded." Andrew's laughing response: "Uh, yeah? And? Where's the problem?" More to come, no doubt.

New City Journal Essay Available
Jun 4, 2008
Andrew's provocative new essay, Story Time, is now available online at City Journal. It begins:
I visited a fourth-grade class in a slum school recently. Since I’m a storyteller by trade, the teacher asked me if I’d tell the kids a story. Now I’m a good storyteller and an all-around charming guy, no doubt, but I wasn’t prepared for the degree of fascination I inspired. Rambunctious mischief ceased on the instant and resolved itself into riveted attention and awestruck stares. I was awfully pleased with myself by the time I was done.
“Don’t take it personally,” the teacher told me brusquely. “It’s just that they’ve never seen anyone like you before. A man—obviously tough—who’s not a gangster.”

Pre-Publication Praise for "Empire of Lies."
May 14, 2008
The first review of Andrew's new novel "Empire of Lies" is out and it's a good one. Publishers Weekly, the publishing industry's premiere trade magazine, calls the book "a wickedly satiric thriller with political overtones" and says its "action builds to an explosive climax." The novel tells the story of Jason Harrow, once a dissolute and amoral New Yorker, now a conservative and religious family man living in the mid-west. When a phone call from a former lover calls Jason back to New York, he's drawn into a search for a missing woman who holds the key to a perilous mystery. Trying to uncover the truth when the American media, academy and entertainment business obscure it under a mountain of politically correct lies, Jason can't tell whether he's on the trail of a terrorist plot or is simply going mad - or both. "Empire of Lies" is scheduled for publication in mid-July from Harcourt/Penzler Press.

"One Missed Call" Has One Good Weekend
Jan 7, 2008
The weekend opening of Warner Bros' new film "One Missed Call," "outpaced all expectations," according to the Hollywood trade paper Variety. Taking in an estimated 13.5 million dollars at 2,240 theaters, the film's 6-thousand plus per screen average beat that of every other picture but the surging indie "Juno." The Japanese horror remake, scripted by Andrew, "hit the sweet spot among younger females, the target demo for PG-13 horror titles," Variety said. This despite what Andrew himself called "brutally bad" reviews. Andrew responded to the film's reception with typical wry humor. "Clearly, if newspapers were written by 13-year-old girls, the reviews would've been sensational," he said. "Plus, the world would be a better place all around."

A Thumbs Up For Damnation Street In Philadelphia
Oct 9, 2006
Another great review for "Damnation Street," this one in Sunday's Philadelphia Inquirer and written by the Inquirer's Book Editor Frank Wilson. The review calls the novel a, "thriller with literary flair," and "moral depth." Wilson was particularly impressed with "the man who called himself John Foy," the hired gun and long-time nemesis of our hero Scott Weiss. "Whatever you want to call him," Wilson says of the multi-named assassin, "he takes his place among the creepiest characters ever to inhabit the pages of a book." Wilson goes on to praise Andrew's prose as being "minimalist" yet "poetic," and adds: "The world Klavan depicts is one seen through a filter of emotional desolation and moral tension. For, make no mistake, moral choice is at the heart of this tale."
